Summary of Article: An incident took place at the Unitree Robotics facility when the "company was assembling its new model. "The new model was a H1 Humanoid robot that is approximately 80,000 euros (approx. $124,000.00 CAD) and almost 1.8 meters tall. It was designed with the intent of having them safely work "alongside humans in industrial environments."
The robot suddenly began moving erratically, kicking and flailing. It even seemed to almost be pushing forward violently, "as if it were trying to escape." Engineers nearby backed away, and luckily one was able to shut it off before anyone got injured. Currently, there is no official statement as to why this happened, so the internet is currently swirling with speculations.
This also isn't an isolated event, as just a couple of months before this incident a robot malfunctioned during a demo in China. It headed straight towards a crowd, fuelling public concerns about integrating these robots into the work force. These events raise the question: "How much testing is enough before these machines enter the workforce? [And ] who's accountable when an error occurs?"
My Thoughts: I think that robots and AI becoming more integrated into the work force is an intimidating thing, and I don't really think that it will be positive, especially in the future. There are already so many people in the world, 8.2 billion people to be exact, and I feel as though we need the most job availability as possible.
It also is, like this article mentions, a possible safety concern. I mean, it is totally possible that the robots begin a retribution at some point in the distant, or even near, future. We've all seen Terminator, haven't we? And that is just one example of the many movies that have rebellious intelligent robots. I think that the robots definitely can be a positive thing in the means of company productivity, but it's going to make less available work for humans, as well as decrease wages.
It definitely is a cool and futuristic idea, but I think its better to keep it that way, an idea, not to make it a reality.
